The MCCEA provides training, legal assistance, labor consultants, and
$1,000,000 in liability coverage from the MEA/NEA. The MCCEA is the soul
bargaining agent. All faculty, part-time and
full-time, are required to belong or pay a representation fee.
The following is a list of items from the master contract that are particularly
relevant to new faculty:
Calendar:
Each semester is 15 weeks long, and the spring and summer sessions
are 7 ½ weeks each. There are also some courses scheduled to run double time
for ½ of a regular semester.
During the fall semester, there is a 2-day break at Thanksgiving.
During the winter semester, there is a one-week break.
Teaching loads:
Each academic discipline has its own established load defined in
terms of contact hours, usually 15-16 hours for full-time faculty. Should a
part-time faculty member be more than a 3/5 load, the salary received is
changed considerably and based pro rata on the full-time rate.
Class size:
There is a master list of maximum class sizes which cannot be
increased without the signature of the instructor. The list is published each
fall and distributed to all faculty.
Course outlines and Policies:
Each faculty member must supply his/her students with a course
outline that includes policies and expectations.
Discipline of a faculty member:
The Master Contract provides a procedure that the administration
must follow. There must be just cause established, and
if there is a hearing held with anyone other than the instructor's associate
dean, the faculty member has the right to representation.
Student Complaint Procedure:
In order to protect the rights of both the student and the
instructor, a complaint must be filed according to the requirements of the
Master Contract. The Complaint must be filed within 20 days of the event
causing the complaint, and the complaint must be signed.
Grievance Procedure:
A faculty member must identify a violation of the Master Contract
and contact the MCCEA Grievance Chair. The first step of the procedure is with
the instructor's immediate supervisor. Efforts are made to resolve problems
informally at first.
Evaluation:
Each part-time faculty member is evaluated during the first term
and then every second term up to three visits. Adjunct faculty
are evaluated every three years, as are full-time faculty on continuing
contract. Every instructor must distribute student Evaluation forms at least
once per year.
Benefits:
Part-time faculty receive one hour of
sick and emergency leave for every weekly contact hour, with no accumulation
until adjunct status is obtained.
Health insurance is available on a pro rata basis.
Tuition grants are available for MCC courses equal to the contact hours taught.
These grants accumulate up to two years and are available to the instructor and
IRS dependents.
Faculty Governance:
The College
Professional Study Committee (CPSC) deals with all educational processes that
are not identified as contractual. Membership on the CPSC includes seven
faculty, four administrators, and two students. The CPSC has two standing
subcommittees, Curriculum and Academic affairs. There are also ad hoc
subcommittees appointed from time to time dealing with specific issues. Issues
such as travel policies, text selection and summer assignments are covered by
divisional policies.
